Uniform, Equipment & Safety Policy

Purpose

This policy outlines Urban Rec's requirements and expectations regarding team uniforms, equipment and participant safety.
Consistent team colours help games run smoothly, while appropriate equipment and safe playing practices help create a safer environment for everyone involved.

Scope

This policy applies to all participants competing in Urban Rec leagues, tournaments and events.

Team Colours

When registering a team, captains may nominate a team colour for the season.
Your League Manager will work with teams to ensure colours are sufficiently distinct and suitable for competition.
Please do not purchase team uniforms until your chosen colour has been approved by your League Manager.
Once approved, teams are expected to wear that colour throughout the season.
If your team chooses not to register a team colour, players should bring both a black shirt and a white shirt each week and wear the colour directed by the League Host.

Individual Teams

Players registering as individuals will receive an Urban Rec team shirt as part of their registration.
The team colour will be selected by Urban Rec and will remain the team's playing colour for the season.
The shirt is yours to keep and wear throughout the competition.

Uniform Requirements

All players are expected to wear a consistent team colour each week.
This helps:

  • Distinguish teams during play.
  • Assist referees and hosts.
  • Improve the overall game experience.

Teams that fail to wear a consistent team colour may receive a Fun Point deduction at the discretion of the League Host.

Equipment Provided

Urban Rec will provide, or arrange for the venue to provide, the equipment reasonably required to conduct the sport being played.
Depending on the sport and venue, this may include:

  • Balls
  • Bibs
  • Goals
  • Nets
  • Markers and cones
  • Playing courts or fields
  • Other sport-specific equipment

Participants are generally not required to bring their own match equipment unless specifically advised otherwise.

Faulty or Damaged Equipment

If you identify faulty, damaged or unsafe equipment, please notify the League Host or Urban Rec representative immediately.
Participants should not continue using equipment they reasonably believe may present a safety risk.
Urban Rec may remove, replace or modify equipment where safety concerns are identified.

Appropriate Footwear

Participants must wear footwear suitable for the sport and playing surface.
Examples may include:

  • Indoor court shoes for indoor sports.
  • Turf shoes for synthetic surfaces.
  • Moulded football boots where permitted by venue rules.
  • Running shoes where appropriate for the sport.

Metal studs, inappropriate footwear, or footwear prohibited by venue rules may not be worn.
Urban Rec staff, referees and venue operators may refuse participation where footwear is considered unsafe or likely to damage the playing surface.

Personal Protective Equipment

Different sports carry different risks.

Urban Rec strongly recommends that participants wear any protective equipment commonly used for their chosen sport.

Examples may include:

  • Shin guards for soccer and football..
  • Knee pads for indoor court sports.
  • Protective eyewear where appropriate.
  • Appropriate footwear for the playing surface.

Participants are responsible for deciding what protective equipment is appropriate for their own circumstances.

Medical Supports & Braces

Participants using braces, supports, casts or similar medical devices should ensure they do not create an unreasonable risk to other participants.
Urban Rec may require padding, modification or removal of equipment where practical.
Participants wearing hard casts or medical devices that present a safety risk may be prevented from participating.

Safe Participation Requirements

For the safety of all participants, players must comply with any safety requirements outlined in the sport rules, venue rules or directions from Urban Rec staff.
Examples may include:

  • Removing jewellery during play.
  • Wearing suitable footwear.
  • Securing medical braces or supports.
  • Removing items that may cause injury to themselves or others.
  • Complying with venue-specific safety requirements.

League Hosts and referees may require a participant to remove or modify equipment they believe presents an unreasonable safety risk.

Personal Equipment

Participants are responsible for ensuring any personal equipment they choose to use is safe, fit for purpose and appropriately maintained.
Urban Rec is not responsible for the maintenance, suitability or safety of participant-owned equipment.

Participant Responsibility

Urban Rec takes reasonable steps to provide safe facilities, equipment and playing environments.
However, participants remain responsible for:

  • Assessing their own fitness and ability to participate.
  • Wearing appropriate clothing and footwear.
  • Choosing whether to wear recommended protective equipment.
  • Following sport-specific safety requirements.
  • Playing within their own physical limits.
  • Making decisions regarding their own health and wellbeing.

Urban Rec can provide recommendations regarding safety equipment, but participants are ultimately responsible for their own participation decisions.

Unsafe Equipment & Participation

Urban Rec reserves the right to prevent a participant from taking the field or court where their clothing, footwear, equipment, accessories or medical supports present a safety risk to themselves or others.

Decisions made by League Hosts, referees, venue operators or Urban Rec representatives regarding participant safety must be followed.
